PhD scholarships at Paderborn University

A message from Igor Burban:

Paderborn University awards scholarships to outstanding young women researchers in pure mathematics who intend to pursue a PhD in one of the following research areas: algebraic geometry, algebraic number theory, differential geometry, harmonic analysis, representation theory, or spectral theory. The funding period is three years. The scholarship amounts to €3,000 per month (tax-free) and does not involve any teaching obligations.

Applications may only be submitted by the researchers themselves. The period between graduation and the start of funding should not exceed 15 months; any exceptions must be justified in detail.

The application must include the following documents:

  1. Letter of motivation (including date and current contact details)

  2. Curriculum vitae (tabular format)

  3. Proof of educational qualifications in the form of copies of secondary school leaving certificates and academic degree certificates (university entrance qualification, BSc, MSc), including translations of grades where necessary

  4. At least one letter of recommendation from a university professor (to be sent separately by e-mail to Ms. Machuletz at eim-m-gs@uni-paderborn.de)

  5. Signed declaration of consent to data processing (original signature required)

Applications may be submitted in either German or English.

Complete application documents must be submitted to the Selection Committee for Doctoral Scholarships in Pure Mathematics for Outstanding Early-Career Women Researchers via the Mathematics Institute’s Office of the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics by 15 February 2026. Applications should be sent by e-mail as a single PDF file to Ms. Machuletz at eim-m-gs@uni-paderborn.de

The selection process consists of two stages conducted in two consecutive committee sessions:

  1. Preselection based on the written application

  2. Final selection following an invitation to a personal interview
